This project visually explores the contrast between Singapore’s restrained environment and the vibrant, outspoken culture of Bulleke-bek (Brunswick). In Singapore, citizens adhere to strict laws and limited freedoms, represented on our map by uniform icons of four hands around a square—symbols of conformity, safety, and the prevalent mindset of "follow the law and you’ll be fine."
In Bulleke-bek, however, activism is embedded in everyday life, seen in protest flyers, murals, and public discussions across the city. Key cultural landmarks also showcase Brunswick’s rich multicultural heritage: A1 Lebanese Bakery reflects the longstanding Middle Eastern community, the Leonidas Greek statue commemorates the strong Greek presence, and the Edinburgh Castle pub highlights a lively social culture. Murals by artists like Tom Civil breathe color and personality into the streets, celebrating a culture of unity, diversity, and activism.
Our map design includes these cultural markers, with uneven tiles from old churches, symbolizing the city’s historical roots and strength. It also traces our unique exploration paths through these sites, symbolizing our individual encounters and shared journey. By capturing these landmarks, we honor Bulleke-bek's distinct spirit, where cultural layers and outspoken community activism thrive side-by-side.
